Tough Guise
Tuesday, April 1, 5 PM, Location
McCormack 3-201
Directed by Sut Jhally and featuring Jackson Katz, Tough Guise examines the
social construction of masculinity in the 21st century and the influence of
pop culture imagery on masculine identities. The film investigates the
relationship between masculinity and violence, including sexual assault and
rape.
The Day My God Died
Wednesday, April 9, 5 PM, Location McCormack 3-201
A feature-length documentary about young girls living in the brothels of
Bombei, known as “The Cages,” whose lives have been shattered by the child
sex trade. The film also introduces viewers to the movement to abolish child
sex slavery, including non-profit organizations that rescue and provide care
to former sex slaves.
Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes
Monday, April 14, 5 PM, Location McCormack 3-201
Pizza by Veggie Planet in Harvard Square
By filmmaker Byron Hunt. The film examines gender violence and homophobia in
hip-hop music, including insights from industry executives, rap fans, social
critics and rap artists, including Mos Def, Chuck D and Russell Simmons.

Self-Defense Presentation
A feminist Akido instructor from the Boston area will give a 30-minute
self-defense class. In addition, representatives from Public Safety at
UMB will present basic information about keeping safe and about their
own self-defense program for women (Rape
Aggression Defense for women).
- 12:15 PM – 1:15 PM
Sexual Assault 101
Representatives from Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC) will give a
workshop titled “Sexual Assault 101”. This workshop briefly introduces
the definition of rape and sexual assault, presents statistics, and uses
skits to allow participants to practice how to safely intervene to make
their community, their interactions, and their environment less violent,
more appropriate, and safer.
- 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM
Men as Allies Against Sexual Violence
Representatives from Northeastern Mentors in Violence Prevention, an
organization whose mission is to raise awareness about the level of
men's violence against women, challenge the thinking of mainstream
society, open dialogue between men and women, and inspire leadership by
empowering people with concrete options to effect change, will give an
interactive presentation.

Sexual Violence in LGBT Communities
A representative from Fenway Community Health Center will present on
issues of sexual violence within gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender
communities. The presentation will include information on domestic
violence in LGBT relationships, as well as hate crimes against LGBT
individuals. A particular focus of this presentations will be regarding
issues facing gay men as survivors of sexual and relationship violence.
- 12:15 PM – 1:15 PM
Film “Defending Our Lives”, produced by Margaret Lazarus
A recent Oscar® winning documentary about the magnitude and severity of
domestic violence in this country. This educational video features four
women imprisoned for killing their batterers and their terrifying
personal testimonies.
- 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM
Sexual Violence in Diverse Communities
Two case managers from BARCC will share their experiences in dealing
with issues of rape and domestic violence in diverse communities,
including communities with stigmas against talking about sex and
immigrant communities.
- 2:30 PM – 4 PM
Hitting Rock Bottom Performance
The Improbable Players, a group of actors, will present Hitting Rock
Bottom, a play about drugs, alcohol and dating violence. The performance
will be followed by a discussion among the actors and audience. Reviews
of the performance suggest that it humanizes dating violence, and
promotes exciting discussions.
- 4 PM – 4:45 PM
Keynote speaker: Margaret Lazarus
Margaret Lazarus is an independent documentary film producer and
director. Her documentary film Defending Our Lives won the Academy Award
for Best Short Documentary Film. Throughout her career she has combined
her political activism with documentary filmmaking. She began by
producing a weekly public affairs program for television in Boston.
With Renner Wunderlich, she founded Cambridge Documentary Films, Inc and
has produced and directed numerous award-winning films including:

The Strength to Resist: Media's Impact on Women & Girls
She is the Executive Co-Director of Cambridge Documentary Films, a non
profit producing and distribution organization that distributes films
about social justice to over 20,000 organizations and theaters that show
documentary films. She is currently a Senior Fellow at the Tisch School
at Tufts University.
- 4:45 PM – 5:45 PM
Community Meeting
Attendees will gather in a circle on the floor and share personal
stories and feelings related to issues of sexual violence. Anonymous
story submissions will also be read aloud, with the authors’ permission,
at this time.
- 5:45 PM – 6: 30PM
Dinner
Following the community meeting, we will have a pizza dinner. During the
dinner, there will be a performance by the Harvard Fallen Angels, an
all-female a cappella group.
